Funeral services for Mr. Kenneth Armond “Jake” Martin, age 82 of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Ruston. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Known throughout Ruston as “Jake,” he was a proud father, grand-father, and veteran. Jake spent his life in service to family, community and country. He is remembered as Ruston’s official Santa Claus, Sunday school teacher, gumbo chef, or electrician.

He served his country as an infantry soldier in the bitter-cold of the Korean War, during which he participated in the liberation of Seoul, the capture of Pyoungyang, and the battle of Unson. As a lifetime member of the Ruston Church of God he served on the church Board of Trustees for many years. While serving Lincoln Parish as a Police Juryman for three terms he was instrumental in creating the Lincoln Parish Park, Lincoln Parish Detention Center, and numerous road and bridge improvements throughout the parish. He was a Colonel on the staff of Governor Treen. An avid sportsman he founded the Sportsman’s Jamboree in Ruston. He retired after 30 years as an electrician for the City of Ruston in 1982. He was Santa in the Ruston Christmas parade, local business lobbies, and even had a mailbox in Rail Road Park. A masterful storyteller, he thrilled his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with original wild stories of the adventures of Big Daddy Rooster.

He is survived by his first girlfriend and wife of 60 years Nelwyn Stephenson Martin. Daughters: Velina McCullough and spouse Denvel McCullough, Sr (of Ruston), Vanieca Martin(of Ruston), and Ranee’ Bruce and spouse Jonn Bruce (of Winchester, KY).
Grandchildren: Denny McCullough and spouse Estelle along with children Amara and Denvel; Lori McCullough along with children Sean, Nicholas, and Emily; Sam McCullough and spouse Jennifer along with children Gavin, Aiden, and Hannah; Robert Irby and spouse Jaime along with children Abigail and Lucas; Pamela Overstreet and spouse Jason along with children Robbie, Chloe, Ashtin, and Piper; Jared McCullough; Benjamin Bruce; Richard Irby; Mason Irby; Sarah McCullough; and special loving friend and care giver Tanya Melancon.
A man who lived his faith and his word, he will be sorely missed by all.
