Morgan Bryan Smith, Jr. of Portland, OR, departed this life Sunday, August 19, 2012 following an extended illness in his recovery from hip surgery. His journey to his Lord and Savior is complete. Graveside service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the Hamilton Cemetery in Dubach, LA, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Fae Colvin Smith; father, Morgan Bryan Smith, Sr; and step-mother, Lois Annie Herreth Barlow Smith; wife Barbie Spence Smith; and his step-sister Marilyn Barlow Brown of Bay City, TX. His maternal grandparents were William Andrew (Uncle Andy) Colvin and Flora Woodman Platt Colvin of Dubach, LA. His paternal grandparents were William Henry Smith and Emma Smith of Jena, LA.

He is survived by his brother William Don Smith and his step-brother and sister-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Joel Barlow of Tomball, TX. He is also survived by many cousins in the north Louisiana and LaSalle Parish.

Bryan was born September 10, 1946 in Ruston, LA. As a youth he was raised in Dubach, LA; Lake Jackson, TX; Brazoria, TX and Monroe, LA. He graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1966. He attended Northeast University in Monroe, LA, and received his Bachelor’s degree. Mr. Smith also attended the University of Houston where he took graduate courses in the School of Social Work.

As a young man, Bryan worked as a teacher of Special Education with the Brazosport ISD and as a police officer with the Lake Jackson Police Department in the 1970’s and 1980’s. After a brief move to Houston, TX, where he worked with the Salvation Army and had a private counseling practice, he settled in Portland, OR where he has lived for the past 20 + years. Bryan truly enjoyed his life in the Northwest and loved the Portland area. He often enjoyed trips to the coast and train trips to Seattle and Vancouver.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
