Six tags will be issued for D’Arbonne

Union Parish resident Delta Rhodes was working at Lester’s gas station when two Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents pulled up with this alligator in the back of their truck. Rhodes said the LDWF agents had been getting complaints from residents near the Dozier Creek subdivision about two alligators who were sunbathing a little too close for comfort. The alligator pictured is 10.7 feet long and it’s because of nuisances like this that the LDWF has instituted an alligator lottery harvest, or hunting season, for alligators on Lake D’Arbonne this year.

For the first time ever, local hunters will have a chance to hunt a different kind of game — one with scales instead of feathers or fur — because the Bayou D’Arbonne Lake Watershed District Commission recently approved an alligator lottery harvest for Lake D’Arbonne.

“It’s definitely an experimental thing,” said Wildlife and Fisheries biology supervisor Charlie Booth. “But anyone who’s interested in applying for the alligator harvest needs to do it now.”
