Lincoln Parish lost another real friend last week with the passing of Dan O’Neal. Mr. Dan was the consummate outdoorsman.

He, along with K.D. Kilpatrick and Lou McGehee, were three legends of our outdoor community. All three were stewards of the land, and each took a piece of ground and turned it into a Sportsman’s Paradise for family and friends.

I first met Mr. Dan more than 50 years ago when I was a kid at our hunting camp south of Tallulah. Subsequently, there would be plenty more opportunities to share his company at the many squirrel mulligan and duck gumbo cookings in the 4-H barn at the old Ruston Fairgrounds.
