The Juneteenth Festival parade will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and will feature groups from the community, such as those pictured above in last year’s event, throwing candy to the crowds waiting.

For more than 20 years, the Town of Grambling has hosted a Juneteenth Festival to honor the holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865, and this year the tradition will continue beginning Friday with an Opening Flag Ceremony and the always popular Juneteenth parade Saturday.

Grambling Mayor Edward Jones said the ceremony will kick off the next five activity-filled days as part of the 2012 Juneteenth Heritage Festival.
