When he took over as coach of GSU in 1941, Robinson had no paid assistants or staff members. It was truly a one-man show as Robinson often made sandwiches for his players to take on road trips: many eating establishments across the Deep South denied service to blacks during those days.

But Robinson did not let the ideology that discriminated against him and his players get him down: He told his young men that if they worked hard, got an education and persevered, they could also overcome.
