La. gets NCLB waiver

WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., said on Tuesday she is encouraged by the Obama Administration’s decision to grant Louisiana a waiver from requirements of No Child Left Behind — the most recent version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
This waiver will give Louisiana more flexibility in how it educates students and utilizes funding.  It also releases the state from the requirement that all students be considered proficient by 2014.  While Louisiana does expect to meet this goal, it is also setting up its own targets for improvement based on student achievement, graduation rate, ACT scores and the growth of non-proficient students.
