To help us learn to read music and at the same time introduce us to new songs, Dad would sign us kids up for singing schools that passed through the Woodlawn Community in Ouachita Parish about once a year. Those schools taught attendees how to read shape notes and lead a congregational song. They also gave you plenty of opportunity to overcome any stage fright you might have, I always had a good time at those schools, as well as the state singing convention, which followed a similar format.
