Ruston got its first taste of the 2012 presidential election early Tuesday when Republican candidate Newt Gingrich stopped at Louisiana Tech University to speak to the crowd gathered to hear what he plans on bringing into the race if elected to run against current President Barack Obama.

The crowd, full of mainly college students, was anxious as security and media officials prepared for Gingrich’s arrival at the Student Center Main Floor. After a short wait, Gingrich took the stage with his wife Callista introducing him as the only Republican candidate committed to removing Obama from the White House.
