For last week’s celebration, the second one celebrated by the city of Ruston, a Red Oak tree was planted in front of City Hall, which is lined with mature Red Oaks. Ruston City forester Claire Moxley said she hoped to see a full canopy in front of the area in years to come.

Arbor Day, according to the National Arbor Foundation Web site, was first observed in Nebraska in 1872 as an estimated one million trees were planted in that state, which was before a treeless plain. Since that time, Arbor Day has rooted itself into celebrations across the world.
