UP close to unitary status
Four decades ago, the Union Parish School District was ordered by the district courts to desegregate its schools and achieve “unitary status.”
Now, in the following century, the district has officially achieved unitary status in three of the several required areas established by the Supreme Court prior to the district court’s 1969 ruling.
U.S. District Judge Robert James filed a signed order declaring the district unitary in the areas of facilities, transportation and extracurricular activities Feb. 2. The order states unitary issues are now “considered resolved” in the three areas, and the status of the three areas “will no longer be considered in court proceedings.”
