About a year ago, I discovered the essay I’d written in the fifth grade about my experience as part of the D.A.R.E. program. Reading through it I could see that of course we learned about drugs and how they could adversely affect our lives, and also back then our D.A.R.E. instructor focused on teaching us tactics related to resisting peer pressure and avoiding “youth gangs.” We also learned about self-esteem and practiced saying no.
