This number of honorees was good, but it could have been higher. Last year, 235 students received this honor. During the Monday event, both Superintendent of Schools Danny Bell and the guest speaker Brenda Lofton, 2006 Louisiana Teacher of the Year, pointed to parents as playing a large role in student academic achievement.
“When expectations regarding academic achievement are part of a family’s way of life, the student is more likely to rise to the occasion (and do well in school),” Bell said.
