It’s doubtful many of us could run our households or our businesses on the same money today as we did 25 years ago.

Think about how much your family income was in 1986. Now think about having to make ends meet today with that same amount of money. Essentially that’s the situation the Louisiana sugar research industry has found itself in over the last decade or so.

In 1986 Louisiana sugar growers and sugar mill owners voluntarily agreed to have 10 cents per ton of cane sold and processed, respectively, dedicated to research into new sugarcane varieties. That 20-cent assessment, or dues, developed by the American Sugar Cane League, has remained the same to this day.
