The Louisville first became famous when shortly after WWII began, on Dec. 26, 1940, it was ordered to proceed to Simmonstown, South Africa, where she received $148 million in British gold that was used to finance Britain’s war. The ship zigzagged across the Atlantic Ocean to New York City where the gold was then picked up and transported to Fort Knox.
