GRAMBLING — “Doug Williams guides Raiders to Super Bowl Victory.”

That is a fabricated headline, to be sure, but one that might have come about had a certain trade evolved in the National Football League during the late 1980s.

Williams, now the head coach at Grambling State University, came within a whisper of being the key component to a trade that was brewing between the Washington Redskins and Raiders in 1987.

At the time, Williams — he was a fourth place Heisman Trophy finisher at GSU in 1977 — was a quarterback on the Redskins’ roster.
