As I sat and watched my 2-year-old niece shut doors to every room in my parents’ house over the weekend, I slowly started to realize just how easily we are shaped at a young age. My niece can’t add numbers together, but she already understands that keeping the door closed keeps what you want inside and what you don’t outside. That is a trait eerily similar to mine — I always strive to make sure doors are shut and locked if I know immediate use is not in the near future — and I know for a fact that the trait comes from my dad.
