In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week in October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), in recognition of the National Alliance on Mental Illness’s (NAMI’s) efforts to raise awareness of mental illness.

This year, Mental Illness Awareness Week takes place October 2 – 8 and is an opportunity to learn more about serious mental illnesses, such as major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
