“These are the types of bacteria that can cause ear infections and pneumonia,” Rea said.

“When children are at that age, they are always putting things in their mouths and spreading germs.”

Rea said for most children the requirement will not mean an additional shot.

“The PCV7 vaccine is part of the routine vaccination program starting when a child is two months old,” Rea said. “If they haven’t had the vaccination by the time they are 24 months old, they don’t need to get it.”
