The best defense against these diseases is to take away the areas where mosquitoes like to hang out and reproduce.

Allen Lowe with Vector Disease Control Inc. — the company hired by the city of Ruston and Lincoln Parish to monitor the mosquito population in our parish — offered these tips to lessen your chance of mosquitoes choosing your home as their home:

• Eliminate areas of standing water, including any containers such as old tires. Mosquitoes reproduce in standing water.

• Keep your grass mowed. High grass is a favorite hangout for mosquitoes, who prefer shady conditions.
