Lowe said results could be expected next Thursday or Friday.

“We’ll also go ahead and do some spraying in the area,” Lowe said. “If we get a positive result back from the state, we’ll ramp up our efforts and discuss our options with the Police Jury,” Lowe said.

While EEE is considered more serious than West Nile virus, it’s also much more rare, especially in north Louisiana, Lowe said.

“If you get West Nile, you might never even show symptoms,” Lowe said.

“With EEE, if you get it, you’ve got it. And if a horse is exposed, the mortality rate is about 70 percent.”
