Equine encephalitis detected in parish

The Lincoln Parish Police Jury, which had called a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to take care of other businesses, quickly gave permission for VDCI to spray for mosquitoes if Lowe deemed it necessary, provided the amount did not exceed $5,000.

Dr. William Green, resident veterinarian at Louisiana Tech University, said Eastern Equine Encephalitis — or EEE — is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes.

“The reservoir is usually birds,” Green said. “The mosquitoes feed on infected birds, pick it up, then pass it on to horses or humans.”
