Sparta conservation efforts overflowing

Some causes for water loss from the Louisiana Sparta Aquifer identified were aging water systems, inadequate or lack of regular water audits, faulty water meters, water operator turnover, water rates which are too low and unmetered consumers.

LRWA State Certified Operator Mike Gonzales pointed to a lack of personal responsibility as a large problem with unmetered consumers.

“If you’ve got customers and you charge a flat rate of $15 a month then there is not incentive to change,” Gonzales said.
Rep. Hollis Downs, R-Ruston, addressed the notion of individual responsibility.
