The Sheriff’s Office uses the Crime Index— the standard crime indicator in law enforcement— to gauge the volume of serious crime, said Wesley Harris, public information officer for the LPSO.

“The Crime Index is a set of specified crimes that are reported by all law enforcement agencies to the FBI for statistical purposes,” he said. “Those offenses are the four violent crimes of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, plus the four property crimes of burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.”
