So the now defensive passenger replies, “Yes, but I’m never driving,” or “It’s usually really dark.”

Figuratively speaking, I’ve been in both seats in this situation.

Recently, in fact, I was a participant and observer of direction-induced confusion. For my vacation time from work, my boyfriend was kind enough to invite me with him on a trip to Texas to see his father. How fun! I would simply pack some clothes, my contact lenses and soft rock CDs, and we would be ready to roll.
