Services were held for Agnes Williams Lewis Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Evergreen Baptist Church in Berkeley, CA with Rev. A. Keith Williams Sr. officiating. Agnes Lewis was born in Ruston, LA on April 4, 1918. She departed this life March 8, 2011 in Berkeley, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband Sylvester Lewis, father Mathew Williams, mother May Lou Modest Williams; step- mother Mattie L. Williams, sisters Virginia Williams, Varie W. McFee, Emma Moore and brother Henry Williams. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Peter Baptist Church. She attended school at Lincoln High School in Ruston, Grambling State University in Grambling, LA Tech University in Ruston and Texas Southern University in Houston. She was a school teacher in for 16 years at Hico, Hillcrest, St. Rest Elementary and was principal for 16 years at St. Rest Elementary in Choudrant. After 32 years of working in the school system she retired and worked the next 20 years with Waterworks District # 3 in Ruston as secretary. Agnes united with the Mt. Harmony Baptist Church after she met and married Sylvester Lewis on April 30, 1942 and celebrated over 50 years together. She was very active in the church. She held many positions such as church secretary and clerk for 43 years, Sunday School teacher, Deaconess and Director of Vacation Bible School. She loved Mount Harmony Baptist Church. She was a member of the LA. Retired Teachers and many sororities. Agnes spent the last few years in Berkeley, CA but her heart will always belong to LA. We will miss the talks, jokes and get together. Agnes leaves to cherish her memories her brother, Mathew G. Williams of Berkeley, CA; step-daughter Dorothy S. Ousley of Detroit, MI and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
