Even with its budget slashed in the past five years, Grambling State University has still managed to come together and make things happen, and the university proved that example on Wednesday morning when a ribbon cutting was held at the school’s new West-Campus.
GSU took over control of the new 157-acre property Aug. 1, but school officials, area representatives, alumni, students and residents were given an opportunity to see how the new campus will be set up after the campus was opened.

Punt, pass, kick offered

RPAR hosts football skills competition

Area youth ages 6-15 will have an opportunity to display their football skills during a free event this weekend.
Ruston Parks and Recreation Department will host the annual NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ruston High field adjacent to the RPAR Department on James Street.

Improvements continue downtown

Downtown Ruston continues to change for the better as crews working on Phases III/IV of the city’s revitalization project keep up the pace improving the heart of the city.
The City of Ruston has been partnered with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development for numerous phases geared toward revitalizing Downtown Ruston, and the work won’t stop once these crews pack up and leave.

CAP program going strong

The door-to-door surveying may be over, but the service that comes with the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office Concentrated Area Patrol program will still be available to anyone looking for some police help in a specific area.
Sheriff Mike Stone’s CAP program — which is designed to better connect with the public and address the day in and day out concerns of the citizens of Lincoln Parish — has been in effect since April when deputies were out getting surveys filled out by residents on how the department is doing and where it needs improvement.

Project Ignition team recognized in Top 10

Project Ignition
In June 2012 Grambling High School’s Project Ignition Team’s campaign was recognized as one of the Top 10 Project Ignition campaigns for 2011-12. Our school now has the opportunity to receive additional funding to go deeper with our campaign during the 2012-13 school year and play a significant role in the 2013 National Service-Learning Conference in Denver, Colo.
Twenty-five other schools were in this competition. The list of the top ten schools is as follows: Blythewood High School in Blythewood, S.C.; Creekview High School in Carrollton, Texas; Ecolé Secondaire Catholique Algonquin

CCS to present ‘Rachel’s Challenge’

Cedar Creek

Cedar Creek School will bring a powerful message to the area at 6 p.m. Tuesday in their Multipurpose Building.
The school will host a “Rachel’s Challenge” program. Rachel’s Challenge is a program designed to combat bullying through telling the story of Rachel Scott.
Rachel Scott was the first student killed in the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.

Therapy helps parents become a therapeutic agent to child

What are “Filial Parenting Groups?” Filial therapy was designed as a treatment program for very young children with adjustment problems, training parents rather than a therapist to become the therapeutic agent. The current name for this particular parenting group is Child Parent Relationship Training (CPRT).

Library to host coupon class

Coupon exchanges available

The Lincoln Parish Library will host a free program about saving money using coupons at 6 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Lincoln Community Room. A Coupon Exchange will be held after the program.
Couponing is an activity that combines shopping skills with couponing in an attempt to save as much money as possible while accumulating the most groceries. The public is invited to learn about the latest tips and tricks to getting the most out of coupons and store polices. The event will include information on how to maximize savings while having fun shopping.
