Piney Hills Harmony plans friends and family night

Piney Hills Harmony Chorus of Sweet Adelines will present a free mini performance during Friends and Family Night at 7:30 p.m. Monday. On the agenda are the group’s regional competition package and songs from its recent show, “Rock Around the Clock.”
The event is a preview for the chorus’ upcoming performance at Sweet Adelines International’s Region 25 competition March 15-17 in Dallas, where choruses and quartets from five states will participate. A quartet from within the chorus will also compete at the regional event, and Ruston resident Sheila Nugent will direct the Family Chorus that performs during the Show of Champions.

Keeping family names alive through the years

We are on a roll planning a party with family coming from five states, honoring our new baby — my great granddaughter, whom we’ve been calling “Little Mo,” but now has a name, “Sydney Ann Morris,” due to arrive in this world April 30, daughter of Susan and Jonathan Morris, granddaughter of Becky and Harold Henderson, of Ruston, and Linda and John Morris, of Fairfax, Va.

‘Swamp People’ to visit Ruston

The Swamp People — Junior and Willie Edwards — will be celebrity guests for Cedar Creek Celebration 2012.
Cedar Creek Celebration 2012, Fais Deaux Deaux on de Bayou is scheduled for Saturday. To kick off the Cajun themed event, the legendary stars of the History Channel’s “Swamp People,” will be featured as celebrity guests. “Swamp People” takes viewers on a journey to the bayous and swamplands of southern Louisiana, where the people who live there are known as Cajuns.
Junior Edwards, a legendary swamper for over three decades, and son Willie, hunt alligators throughout the 30 day season in the bayous and swamplands of the Atchafalaya. The Atchafalaya River Basin is the largest swamp in the United States and one of the country’s most ecologically unique regions.

Zetas help community

Area Zetas observe finer womanhood with church, fellowship and community service.
Members of Epsilon Lambda, Louisiana Tech University; Psi Beta, Grambling State University; and Epsilon Alpha Zeta Chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. observed Finer Womanhood Month Feb. 26 with New Rocky Valley Baptist Church in Grambling, then fellowship at the Grambling home of Archie Tatum and community service. Zetas delivered dinner to sick residents and shut-ins in the area.

Five intersections to see improvements

City of Ruston aldermen made decisions to continue their campaign to clean up city streets at Monday night’s regularly scheduled meeting.
Alderman voted unanimously to pass a resolution authorizing the city to enter into an agreement with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to improve several intersections in the city limits.

Three arrested on drug charges

Three people were arrested Thursday on charges that stemmed from warrants in Texas.
Jarred Chase McDaniel, 25, of Ruston, Lance Evin McDaniel, 27, of Dallas, and Jennifer Natai Slaughter, 25, of Dallas, were arrested on several charges after being stopped by local law enforcement.
According to the arrest affidavit, J. McDaniel was driving a silver Dodge Magnum north on Louisiana Highway 33.

Simsboro moves ahead with projects

At a brief town hall meeting in Simsboro Monday night, officials said they are currently waiting on word from the state to move forward with certain projects.
The town of Simsboro is in the process of finishing their gray water project, and moving forward with their town hall renovations.
The gray water project, Simsboro’s first major “go green” initiative, will serve as another source of revenue for the town.

Local gallery explores what is art

What is art? How does one define what is “good” and what is “bad?” These are questions that have been plaguing art critics, patrons and artists for years. In fact the definition is so subjective that when googling a variety of definitions, images and concepts appear. Local gallery Art Innovations will explore these themes in their upcoming show, A Fool’s Art, on April 1 from 7-9 p.m. According to the Facebook event page “this juried competition will make you question beauty, aesthetic and the basic assumption of art forms”.
