Locals serve as missionaries in Kenya

A leap of faith is almost an understatement for Ruston couple Leigh Ann and Taylor Kilpatrick’s decision to move to Kenya without enough funds to execute their mission there.
But, the Kilpatricks aren’t worried, because they believe God is on their side.
“We felt the Lord call us to missions, and we said OK,” Taylor said.

5K, fun run to raise funds for Kenya

Supporters of Share International, Inc. are pleased to announce the 2012 “Share Saturday,” an upcoming 5K and one-mile fun run fundraiser to benefit Share’s SEND Conference Center in Lodwar, Kenya.
Share, headquartered in Ruston, is an international Christian evangelical and humanitarian organization that serves the Turkana people of Kenya, the Toposa of South Sudan and the Dalits of India. Recently, Share launched an ambitious project to construct a large facility in Lodwar, Kenya that will serve as a conference and training center to equip Kenyans and others to carry the gospel throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

Fun experiences make life exciting in ‘Big D’

I’ve had a fun experience and another coming up this Thursday. I’ll save that for next week.
We had our Young at Heart Valentine’s luncheon and party at the church. I’ll hit the highlights.
We’re fortunate in that our pastor and wife, Dr. Scott Fenton and Judy, could make it as comedians if they decided to change professions. She’s the real star, of course.

Life Choices to host Daly

Life Choices of North Central Louisiana is pleased to announce Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family, will speak at the organization’s annual banquet and fundraiser on March 13.
Daly assumed the presidency of Focus on the Family, a post previously held by James Dobson, in 2005 after 16 years with the ministry. As president, Daly also hosts the organization’s National Radio Hall of Fame-honored daily broadcast, heard by more than 2.9 million listeners a week on more than 1,000 radio stations across the U.S.

Dawgtown Showdown volunteers needed

Mary Peshoff wants to make sure people are well informed about zombies, and if local residents sign up to help with the Dawgtown Showdown Speech and Debate Tournament, they just might get the chance to hear about it.
Mary is one of the 12 students involved in the local home school association’s speech and debate club, which is part of the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association.

Library board unconfirmed

The Lincoln Parish Library Board of Control members delayed electing new officers and established an early library closure day during their monthly meeting on Wednesday.
Only five of nine members were present at the meeting, including Virgil Orr, Sharon Thomas, Ronny Walker, Charles Penuell and President Ray Bratton.

Entergy performs ‘blitz’

Crews from Entergy have been out since Monday performing a “blitz” activity in North Louisiana.
During the “blitz,” crews throughout the area have been working to perform preventative maintenance work on poles, lines and other devices that may need work.
Entergy Customer Service Manager Jim Pesnell said the blitz is meant to finish a large amount of work in a short time span using teamwork.

Wastewater project cleared to progress

Simsboro receives DEQ grant

SIMSBORO — The Village of Simsboro recently acquired a $120,000 grant from the Department of Environmental Quality Sewer Revenue Bonds to go toward finishing a wastewater project and any other additions to their sewer system.
In a report issued by the Louisiana State Bond Commission back in January, $72 million was approved for projects statewide and $5.2 million was reserved for savings by refinancing existing public debt.
