Relaying for life

Lincoln Parish kicks off annual fundraising effort

Lincoln Parish residents are gearing up to battle cancer as they prepare for this year’s Relay for Life on April 20.
Last Thursday evening, members of the community gathered at the Ruston Lincoln Visitor’s Center to learn about Relay for Life.
“You have to ask yourself ‘Why am I here?’” said Maura Koonz, American Cancer Society community representative. “There is a reason why we are here.”

Tech presents ‘Robin Hood’

With their upcoming production of “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” the director, cast and crew will give their rendition of the tale many are familiar with.

International students provide tastes of culture

The atmosphere was universal on Saturday night as a crowd gathered on the main floor in Louisiana Tech University’s Student Center to participate in an annual get together that always leaves attendees clamoring for more.
For the 13th straight year, Tech hosted the International Student Scholarship night, and international students from countries all over the planet, including Nepal, Nigeria, Vietnam and even India, were on hand to serve guests food and also give them a taste of some of their culture.

Jazz brunch set for Feb. 4 in Bernice

An interlude of New Orleans-style jazz music and gourmet dining will greet attendees of the Jazz Brunch with Jackie Greggs beginning at 11 a.m. on Feb. 4, in Bernice.
Greggs is a renowned jazz vocalist and arranger, and her musical ensemble will be in the spotlight in the fellowship hall of Bernice United Methodist Church, located on U.S. Highway 167 at 8th Street.

Dance company returns to Tech

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, a premier company in the United States, will return to Louisiana Tech University on Feb. 9.
With influences from Africa, the Americas and the Middle East blended into their performance, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana features Spanish dance, solos, duets and company dances.

“Holder should beware of extreme excitement when attending games.”

Techsters, FSU: Rivalry renewed

Conference showdown set for ‘Pack the House’ night

Over the past decade, Louisiana Tech and Fresno State have developed an intense rivalry on the basketball court, as the Lady Techsters and Bulldogs have dominated the Western Athletic Conference and played some memorable games in the women’s sport.
The rivalry will continue on the Thomas Assembly Center floor Saturday at 7 p.m., when the Lady Techsters host the Bulldogs in the NCAA’s 5th annual “Pack the House” Challenge.

Key’s 41 points leads Dubach win

DUBACH — Dubach High’s boys and girls swept a weekend basketball doubleheader over Gibsland-Coleman.
The Lady Hornets, ranked in the Top 10 for Class C in the weekly Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll, took a 70-64 victory and the Hornets were a 64-36 winner.

Get prepared for tax season

That time of year has come yet again, and although many community members may be dreading tax season there are a few perks area residents should keep in mind.
According to Louisiana Treasurer John Kennedy, the IRS owes Louisiana taxpayers more than $1.3 million due to checks not being delivered because of an address change or other reason.
