Ready to hunt for a bargain

La. Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday starts Friday

Gov. Bobby Jindal has urged hunters and campers to take advantage of the 2011 Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday that runs Friday through Sunday.
 Jindal said, “This is a great opportunity for all hunters and campers to save money on the equipment they need to enjoy Sportsman’s Paradise. The weekend-long event will also bring more customers to our local hunting and sporting stores, which will further benefit our businesses and Louisiana’s economy.”
A wide range of supplies is eligible for exemption from all state and local sales taxes.  Eligible items include:

Teens arrested in vehicle burglaries

Ruston Police Department officers have arrested three teenagers in connection with a rash of vehicle burglaries that took place at local apartment complexes.
RPD Public Information Officer Maj. Tim Parker said Louisiana Tech Police officers stopped two black males, both ages 15, on the Tech campus area around 5:40 a.m. Saturday because they were carrying a large amount of items in several backpacks.

Hunter ed classes available

Numerous area residents come into the classroom of Mike Rainwater every year to give hunter education their best shot.
The Louisiana Hunter Education Certification course is mandatory for anyone born on or after Sept. 1, 1969 who wishes to purchase a Louisiana Hunting License. Those born prior to the date are grandfathered in.
But Rainwater, a Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s deputy, said his classes draw plenty of older participants as well.

GSU picked for Obama’s challenge

Interfaith initiatives planned

President Barack Obama challenged American colleges and universities to take part in a community outreach program coined Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge, which calls upon people from various walks of life to come together and find solutions for community disparities. Efforts range from building houses with Habitat for Humanity to mentoring, in addition to building social capital and civility.

Library showcases technology for patrons

Demonstrations to illustrate e-books, language-learning tools, more

Lincoln Parish Library staff will present a Technology Fair from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Library Events Center.
Through demonstrations every 15 minutes, patrons can visit different stations to learn about e-books, downloadable audiobooks, online language learning tools, one-on-one online tutoring and more.
The newest service, Overdrive, provides access to e-books, digital audiobooks, movies and music. Patrons can enjoy materials on personal computers, e-readers, digital music players and smart phones.

Man booked for fourth DWI

A Ruston man was booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center on Saturday for his fourth DWI.
According to his arrest affidavit, at approximately 8:35 a.m. Christopher A. Sauber, 31, of 1605 Cooktown Road, was traveling east bound in the outside lane of Interstate 20 in a black Oldsmobile near the parish line at milepost 72.

Peer support center to reopen

On Wednesday, Second Beginnings, a peer support / drop-in center, will re-open in another location, in the former Ruston Mental Health Center at 901 White St. in Ruston. This new site is still adjacent to the Northern Louisiana Medical Center.
“We are people who are ready to share our accomplishments, work together and support each other in an effort to gain a new lease on life in an open and relaxed atmosphere,” said the Second Beginnings staff.

‘Jam at Joe’ was sweet mix

Another “Jam at the Joe” event is in the books and, once again, the preseason football extravaganza proved to be a success.
While the attendance count wasn’t as high as officials had hoped for — attribute the drop to the sizzling heat that continued to blanket the North Louisiana area this past weekend — the jamboree still featured plenty of excitement for fans eager to get in the mood for another season.
