Two new scams reported

The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Ruston Police Department have reported two unrelated scams in the parish.
LPSO Public Information Officer Maj. Stephen Williams said the office has received reports from residents who have recently gotten phone calls from individuals who claim to be collecting money on behalf of the LPSO.

Cleaning up

GRAMBLING — Every year, parents have to buy new uniforms and clothes for their children to attend school.
This year, parents and staff members at Grambling Laboratory High School and Middle School thought the schools themselves deserved a little sprucing up, too.

Property valuation

Some property assessment notices to be sent out soon

Lincoln Parish residents whose assessed property value has gone up 15 percent or more since last year on property subject to ad valorem taxes will soon be receiving an updated valuation notice from the parish assessor’s office. This would include new or additions to structures.
Reassessment notices will also be going to owners of personal business property that are subject to ad valorem tax, regardless of the amount of change in the value. Personal property, such as business inventory, machinery and equipment, furniture and fixtures, as well as oil and gas property are reassessed annually.

Simsboro millage to remain stable

SIMSBORO — Business as usual was conducted at the monthly town hall meeting of the village of Simsboro this week. After the village’s bills were accepted, Mayor Willie Hendricks opened the floor to discuss the town millage that was to be voted on during the meeting.
“The town millage that we have now has been the same since 1999. I looked at the records and (the millage) has not changed,” said Hendricks.

Lewis Street to undergo major renovations

Currently, the street is very narrow, and when a driver pulls up to the stop sign at its intersections with Martin Luther King Drive and Cornell Avenue, the continuing road is not directly in front of the driver, but catercorner. Through working with project engineer and construction manager Riley Company (contracted for $100,000 for construction oversight and inspection during the project), Amethyst Construction is slated to move portions of Lewis Street over about 50 feet in certain locations to align the intersections.

Fires erupt in mobile home, local apartment complex

Parish and city firefighters recently responded to two structure fires.
At around 1:10 p.m. Wednesday, Lincoln Parish Fire District received a report of an attic fire at Green Acres mobile home park on Water Tank Road.

Help students go back to school

Residents feeling the squeeze over school supply lists this fall have plenty of help to ease their burden. Throughout the city and parish various churches, organizations and nonprofits are gathering school supplies, donations and funds to help send Lincoln Parish students back to school.

'Fire up' some safety knowledge

In the last few weeks, my journalistic duties have involved fire.
When the scanner goes off and firefighters rush to the scene, many times we are there, too. Now while the heavily-dressed men and women in uniform are attempting to protect property and save lives, we journalists may appear to be sidelined observers eager to document the misfortune of others by taking photographs and gathering facts.

Parents making tough decisions

For any parent who has a child with a disability, you know how difficult it is to make decisions on behalf of that child. There are a million decisions to make when it comes to your child’s education, decisions that you know will impact the rest of their life. Now I must preface this by saying that I am not a parent myself, but don’t stop reading, I will speak from the perspective of my parents.

Colby Cameron likens the quarterback competition at Louisiana Tech University to a job interview.
“When you finish college, you have to start looking for a job and when you do, you have to believe you’re the best person for it,” he said. “That’s how I feel about being the quarterback here. I believe I’m the best one for it.”
