Police seek suspect in beating

Second man believed to be involved in McDonald’s drive-thru incident

The Ruston Police Department is seeking a suspect who allegedly beat a man unconscious at the McDonald’s restaurant on Trenton Street.
RPD Public Information Officer Lt. Tim Parker said his office has obtained an arrest warrant for second-degree battery for Rico Devon Qualls, 21, of Ruston, who police believe is a suspect in the incident that occurred around 11:30 p.m. May 29.

Louisiana team outlasts Texas East for southwest regional championship

The numbers tell the story for Louisiana’s District 5 baseball team.
Six, 34-3 and 20-10.
The latter digits refer to the final score of the team’s win over Texas East in Monday night’s Big League Southwest Regional tournament championship game at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

Group seeks nominees 40 and younger for new award

Hundreds of students graduate from Ruston High School every year.
Some of these former Bearcats go on to achieve amazing accomplishments, whether it be in the field of business, government, sports or elsewhere. But because many of these individuals move away or their RHS ties are forgotten, the school’s alumni have found a way to keep track of such exceptional former students.

527th Engineering Battalion reunites

More than 20 years ago, members of the Louisiana Army National Guard 527th Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy) deployed with great fanfare for Operation Desert Storm.
On Dec. 3, 1990, the Battalion received the alert notification and on Dec. 6, 1990, they were activated. They mobilized to Ft. Polk to the cheers of large crowds throughout Louisiana.

RHS cheerleaders rock NCA camp

The Varsity Cheerleaders from Ruston High School recently returned from a National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) summer camp.
The camp was held at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and attracted more than 500 cheerleaders from the surrounding states. It was a time for the team to learn new skills and routines and bond as a squad.

Gardeners offer a hand to the needy

Gardeners are friends of the needy. If we have a surplus, we try to find someone to give it to or if we see someone that is needy we try to give them something that they need.
In much of our area, I think that we have a needy situation that we can help. Many of our native plants are suffering and not blooming like they should this time of year. Many of our landscapes are suffering from the dry weather.

Anthony bill to benefit parish

When Florida resident Casey Anthony was acquitted of murder in the death of her 2-year-old child, Caylee, earlier this month, it angered many around the nation.
The fact that Anthony went a month without notifying the authorities that her daughter was missing helped sway the public’s opinion on the 25-year-old mother’s guilt. And it is this same issue that has prompted some states, including Louisiana, to propose new laws.

4-H to showcase work at livestock show

It’s livestock show time in Lincoln Parish again. It’s been several years since Lincoln has been able to host a livestock show and we’re all excited to see this come back. On Aug. 6, 4-H members from across the state will be unloading their cows, hogs, sheep, goats, rabbits, and chickens at the North Louisiana Expo Center.

Helpful tips for 'life planning'

A few weeks ago some old friends asked that I speak to their club sharing some thoughts about what I like to call “life planning.” It’s not that I have any fear of discussing death, but the term “estate planning” just has a morose tone. Also, there are many decisions one can make which will help for many years while still here. Then I have noticed with summer trips there are many who come into the office before “getting on the road” — not a bad idea.

‘5’ team bats boom in title win

With tongue placed firmly in cheek, Norman Edison Parkman said his team had their opponent “right where we wanted them” during the early stages of Monday night’s Big League Southwest Regional championship game.
Well, that might have been a true moment of semi-jesting by “Coach Eddie,” because Louisiana’s District 5 squad trailed 8-0 to Texas East entering the bottom half of the third inning.
