Storm uproots trees in North Ruston

Kitchen catches ablaze

Seventeen firefighters were on the scene of a kitchen fire just north of the Jackson Parish/Lincoln Parish line.
The Lincoln Parish Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at approximately 8 a.m. Monday at 1531 Longstraw Road, just east of Ruston Regional Airport.  LPFD spokesman Jim Hilton said six fire apparatus and 11 personnel with the LPFD were on the scene, along with three personnel from the Choudrant Fire Department and three personnel from Jackson Parish Ward 2 Fire Protection District.

Woman badly injured after two dogs attack

A 90-year-old woman remains in the hospital following an attack by two dogs last month.
Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office Maj. Stephen Williams said Evelyn Goers, 90, of Simsboro, suffered what appeared to be critical injuries when she was attacked by two Tibetan Mastiffs on May 21.
“Ms. Goers suffered numerous bites and scrapes and was transported to the Northern Louisiana Medical Center where she is being treated,” Williams said. “The dogs were family pets and were unfamiliar with Ms. Goers due to her living out of town.”

A healthy lunch

Ginette Butitta (left) and Doris Slade, both of Ruston, were two area seniors who enjoyed a free lunch after participating in a recent health fair sponsored by the Lincoln Council on Aging. Participants were treated to presentations by various health care agencies and vendors before eating lunch.

Flag is more than fabric

There are several times a year to write about patriotic themes. I enjoy doing so. These include the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Flag Day. Sometimes I feel a little cramped in sharing some thoughts at Flag Day, which is June 14, so I thought that this year I would use a little extra column space in referring to this holiday. Therefore I write of Flag Day, both today and then next Tuesday, June 14.
