Seasons, reasons and resolutions

The time has come for the end; when the proverbial “pen hits the paper.” I’m not referring to taxes, but year-end resolutions. We all make them, and we’ve all broken them, but this year is different. This year is the year for positive changes. These changes will set the course for how, not just this, but the years to come for life expectations will propel life into motion.

The unlikely opponent that day when Don Shula set the all-time wins record, then the starting quarterback taking the heat while rookie Donovan McNabb learned the ropes, now he’s the quarterback coach here.

Cedar Creek girls take second win in tournament

Cedar Creek High’s girls won again at the annual Sterlington High Holiday basketball tournament on Wednesday.
The Lady Cougars, who were a 55-43 winner against Farmerville on Tuesday, gained their latest win with a 44-29 finale against Delhi Cahrter.
Pacing the way in the victory was Ruby Richie with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. She had scored a season-high 27 points in the win against Farmerville.

With New Year’s Eve fast approaching, the time for fireworks has finally arrived in Lincoln Parish.
Whether shooting them at a party or with your family, New Year’s is one of the biggest times of the year for the colorful displays of lights, but even these traditional holiday classics can be dangerous if not used properly.

Structure fire starts in chimney

The Lincoln Parish Fire Department responded to a report of a chimney fire at a residence located at 14506 Louisiana Highway 151 at approximately 1:15 a.m. Dec. 27.
This location is in western Lincoln Parish and is approximately three miles north of Arcadia on La. Hwy 151.
The first LPFD unit on the scene found that the fire had spread from the chimney to the attic area of the residence. LPFD spokesman Jim Hilton said firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire before any major fire damage could occur.

New director named to Piney Hills

Sheila Stepp Nugent has been named director of Piney Hills Harmony chorus of Sweet Adelines International.
Nugent, of Ruston, was appointed after serving four years as assistant director and nine months as interim director. She earned the status of “certified director” from the international office of Sweet Adelines in March 2010, following a rigorous course of study and examinations.

North Louisiana native Capt. Darren J. Thomas was among the last hundred soldiers to depart from Iraq and to end the conflict.
Before dawn on March 20, 2003, there was an airstrike in southern Bagdad that was the start of a long war. Among those first soldiers to enter the battlefield was Thomas.
Since 2003, Capt. Thomas has left his wife and children behind to endure three additional deployments to various regions of Iraq. Capt. Thomas is the son-in-law of Grambling resident Gloria Rabon.

Group to celebrate anniversary

The Birthday Fellowship Organization will hold its nine-year anniversary in January at Ryan’s in Bossier City.
