Holiday festivities begin with bonfire, live music

A crowd gathered Saturday night for Choudrant’s annual Christmas in the Village. Bonfires blazed, twinkling lights were lit and live music filled the air at the corner of U.S. Highway 80 and La. 145. Practissing 4 Heaven, David and Karen Hodnett and performers from Anchor Tabernacle and Bethel churches provided entertainment while children decorated ornaments, had their faces painted and awaited their moment with Santa Claus, who was accompanied by a costumed Schnauzer, dubbed “Santa Paws” for the occasion.

Ruston native promoted to Marine Corps sergeant

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Ruston native and Ruston High School class of 2006 graduate Kendrick D. Underwood was promoted to the rank of Marine Corps Sgt. during a ceremony with fellow Marines aboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Va., on Wednesday.

‘Go green’ during recycling day

This year, after Trailblazer Resource, Conservation and Development lost its federal funding, Lincoln Parish was left without a convenient way to recycle, and it seems the worthwhile service was missed. During the first Operation Paper Recycling Day, held in October, City Environmental Services Manager Camille Mize said 3.52 tons — or 7,040 pounds — of waste that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill were collected.

There are few things that draw my attention as much as a box full of free books, so when one appeared on a desk at work the other day, I was compelled to investigate its contents. The textbooks on economics and physiology didn’t hold much interest for me, but then I came across a self-help tome, “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living,” by Dale Carnegie.
