Maybe it wasn’t such a “bird brain” stunt that the Air Force Academy’s famous mascot pulled during Monday’s Avocare Independence Bowl in Shreveport.

Paving the way to pedestrian-friendly

Ruston businessman Joe Henderson remembers when getting to the front door of his financial-services office on South Vienna Street was a treacherous journey.
“The sidewalk was old,” Henderson said. “It had buckled and cracked. People were tripping.”
Now it’s a smooth, safe stroll for his clients and other pedestrians. In fact, Henderson says the work done by the city as part of the Ruston 21 quick response sidewalk improvements program has given his block “new curb appeal.”

Burning dangerous at this time

A 1/2 acre of land was burned in a grass fire off U.S. Highway 80 just west of Simsboro on Monday afternoon. Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1 received a call about a grass fire at approximately 2:24 p.m. Monday and arrived on the scene at 2:30 p.m. with five firefighters.

MONROE — Diplomas were awarded to 473 students during the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s fall commencement exercises Dec. 18, in Fant-Ewing Coliseum on the ULM campus.

War on drugs is multifaceted

The streets of Lincoln Parish are a little safer this season because of a push by the Lincoln Parish Narcotics Enforcement Team to clean them up. Before Christmas nearly 30 individuals were placed into the parish detention center on drug charges as part of Operation Lincoln Roundup. Warrants are out on nearly 80 more suspects.
