Pumpkin Patch proceeds presented

Kim Birch, owner of Townsend House Gifts, presented a check to Terrie Queen Autrey, Domestic Abuse Resistance Team’s community advocate, for proceeds of the annual Pumpkin Patch.
“Every year, our community becomes more supportive of this project,” said Birch. “We sold a lot of pumpkins, but we also received a lot of donations during the Pumpkin Patch.”

Bar shooting leads to arrest

Grambling Police arrested a man Saturday after a shooting occurred at the Plush Sports Bar.
According to the affidavit, law enforcement responded to the shooting at approximately 1:55 a.m. to find the victim of the shooting was no longer at the scene.
Witnesses at Plush Sports Bar reported to police the victim had been taken to Northern Louisiana Medical Center for treatment.
The affidavit states that once the officer made contact with the victim and witnesses who were on the scene they each stated a fight had broke out at Plush.

RHS senior accepted to West Point

Ruston High School senior Josh Owens was in class two weeks ago when he received news from Rep. Vance McAllister that he had been accepted to the United States Military Academy, West Point.
“I was ecstatic. It definitely put me on cloud nine for a few days,” Owens said. “We’re not supposed to be on our phones at school, but when a congressman calls, you have to make an exception.”

Tech’s Smith honored by C-USA

Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Smith was named the Conference USA Player of the Week for week 12 the league office announed Monday.
The junior guard was a huge reason for Tech earning two conference wins this past week by 20-plus points.
Smith headed up a defense which forced Charlotte into 24 turnovers and he dished out a season-high 13 assists with only two turnovers to his name in the 80-60 victory over the 49ers.
As if that wasn’t enough, the St. Petersburg, Fla., native came out two nights later and dished out another 13 assists to only one turnover.

Louisiana Tech men’s basketball coach Michael White said that while standout junior guard Raheem Appleby doesn’t require surgery, he’s still weeks away from returning from strained ankle ligaments he suffered earlier this season.

Top ’Cats honored for gridiron performances

Ruston High School held its annual football banquet Monday night at the Louisiana Tech Student Center, with five Bearcats taking home top honors. Awarded during the banquet were, from left to right, Zavian Jackson, Senior Award; Josh Owen, Scholastic Award; Garrett Soileau, Chick Childress Award; Kramer Newsome, Michael Parker Award; and Keon Johnson, Hoss Garrett Award.

Jr. golf tourney on tap
Ruston junior golfers ages 11-18 are invited to compete in the AJGT Beaver Creek Spring Junior Classic at the Beaver Creek Golf Club on Feb. 22 – 23.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament is ranked by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and hosted by the Arrowhead Junior Golf Tour.
The tournament entry fee is $195.00 and includes two days of green fees, tee gifts and trophies in four age divisions.

Support for Tech ’Dawgs appreciated

Tech Nation, give yourself a round of applause for a mission well done.
Louisiana Tech’s Athletics Department tabbed last Saturday’s home game as “Operation Sellout” with the goal of selling out all 8,000 seats of the Thomas Assembly Center as the Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team took on the Thundering Herd of Marshall in a Conference USA game that was televised on the CBS Sports Network.
And basketball fans all over the country got a chance to see just how much area fans support Tech athletics.

4-H camp positively shapes teens

As the parent of a 14 year old daughter myself, I can relate to many parents out there that struggle with trying to make sure they are meeting the needs of their teenager so that she/he will grow into a confident and self-sufficient adult.
We parents are constantly looking for ways to foster good character and strength in our teenagers so they will hopefully make the right choices that will ensure a positive future for them.
