Still time to help St. Jude

The 33rd Annual St. Jude Radiothon took place this week and Lincoln Parish rose to the occasion by raising more than $112,500.
The event was sponsored by Z107.5 Big Z Country and the Zeta Rho Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, and businesses and individuals donated pledges, became Partners in Hope and dropped cash in the donation box at Super 1 Foods during the two-day event. Associate regional director for St. Jude Graesa Amdahl called the response “amazing.”

When you’re young you get sad

When deciding what to write for my column this week there were three facts that came to mind: 1. Ice storms are a major inconvenience 2. Valentine’s Day is great if you’re not single and 3. When you’re young you get sad, as singer/songwriter Ryan Adams once wrote.
Now, I could write about the two most obvious things happening this week — Valentine’s Day and Ice storms — and more than likely, those would be something everyone could relate to, but, as a writer, I tend to find inspiration from things that have been on my heart; not just my mind.

Tech professor, researcher receives prestigious prize

Yuri Lvov, professor of chemistry and T. Pipes Eminent Endowed Chair in Micro and Nanosystems at Louisiana Tech University’s Institute for Micromanufacturing, has been selected to receive the prestigious Humboldt Research Award in chemistry, also known as the Humboldt Prize, by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.

Temple Baptist Pre-K: Preschoolers learn about glaciers, snow

The K-Connection class at Temple Baptist has been learning about glaciers and making snow.

Cedar Creek: Students excel in academics, learn about the past

Shakespeare contest
Cedar Creek senior Irie Ewers earned first place in the school’s annual Shakespeare competition.
Sophomore Mary Tyler Storms earned second place; freshman Sarfraz Ahmed placed third; and Rachel Pardue, a junior, placed fourth overall.
The competition is open to all Cedar Creek students, but the Advanced placement and Pre-AP classes have the competition built into their curriculum.

Techsters hoping for big crowd

Seventh annual Pack the House game to be on national TV

Louisiana Tech will host Charlotte at 8 p.m. tonight at the Thomas Assembly Center in a game that will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net.
The contest is the seventh Annual Pack the House game at the Thomas Assembly Center. This year’s game will have a pink theme to it as the first 500 fans through the Thomas Assembly Center doors will receive free PINK OUT T-shirts in an effort to help promote breast cancer awareness. The Lady Techsters will also be sporting their pink uniforms for the contest.

Fortner to return to TAC as broadcaster

When Louisiana Tech hosts Charlotte tonight at the Thomas Assembly Center in a nationally televised game on Fox Sports Net, a familiar figure will be part of the television broadcast crew calling the game.
Former Lady Techster assistant coach Nell Fortner will sit alongside Pete Pranica on the broadcast team for the contest.

Tech golf ties for ninth place

SAN ANTONIO, Texas —Victor Lange led Louisiana Tech with a 1-over-par 73 on the final day of competition as Louisiana Tech moved up to a tie for ninth with Kansas State at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational.
Two other Bulldogs — Chuck Spears and Travis Wilmore — shot tournament best scores in the final round of a closely competed tournament that saw five teams finish within three shots of each other.

Tech track women ranked eighth

Louisiana Tech’s women’s track and field team has moved up one spot to eighth in the South Central Region according to the latest rankings released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The women’s program is eighth in the region led by recent performances by Pamela Lee in the high jump and Kim Francis in the 60m hurdles. The men’s team is ranked 19th in the region led by Trey Hadnot’s 200m dominance.
