Be cautious of utility scammers

BBB reports scam surfaces after holidays

Scammers are targeting area utility customers with threats to disconnect gas or electric service unless accounts supposedly in arrears are settled immediately with prepaid debit cards.
“What we’re finding is they’re asking for information and telling you they’ll pay your utility bill for you,” said Erica Goings, accreditation coordinator with the Better Business Bureau of Northeast Louisiana.

Influenza virus becomes serious for North Louisiana

Here in Ruston and Lincoln Parish there seems to be a growing trend of residents being more health conscious. However, influenza or commonly known as the flu, is still prevalent despite attempts to contain the illness.
Elizabeth Turnley, director of marketing and physician liaison for Northern Louisiana Medical Center, said like many hospitals in the region, Northern Louisiana Medical Center is seeing an increase in emergency room visits among people with the flu.

Bicentennial quilt on display at library

The Lincoln Parish Library is the current home for the traveling Louisiana Bicentennial Quilt, “Stitch by Stitch, Binding Together 200 Years of Louisiana History.”
After traveling around the state, the quilt will eventually be permanently displayed at the State Archives in Baton Rouge. Residents may view this artwork between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sundays through Jan. 31.

GSU Day to return to state capitol

Grambling State University is proud to announce that Northern Louisiana’s “best kept secret” will strut its stuff to state legislators in the state’s capitol.
On March 18, the prestigious and renowned university will have its own day in the central part of the Sportsman’s Paradise at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge. Working diligently in the preparation and planning of the highly anticipated event, GSU Interim Executive Director of External Affairs Debra Johnson said some years ago that the university had a designated day at the capitol.

United States-Israel relationship gets personal

As my plane sped along the tracks from the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, I smiled. One day after Christmas I flew to Washington, D.C., for the winter leadership conference hosted by American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
My knowledge about the American-Israel relationship was nonexistent at the beginning this four-day conference. But with the help of Andy Andrew, my field leader, and other AIPAC representatives I learned a wealth of information.

Suffering from loneliness, remembering Wes

This is what I call a cold, dreary, lazy day here in Dallas. I’m not sure how it will be when you read this. It’ll be different — that’s for sure. Every day here is.
People are dying here from the flu, so except for church, I am trying to stay in. A couple of my friends, Paul and Debbie, had planned to take me to dinner on Sunday evening and I hope when they called to postpone it they couldn’t know how pleased I was. I did NOT want to get out.
