Routine audit raises concerns

State officials satisfied with LMCH plan of action

The Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office says it will continue to monitor two areas of deficiency noted in a recent audit of the Ruston-based Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services, but the office is satisfied that the church-related organization is fixing the problems.
“Already we are seeing progress in the corrective action plan,” Joy Irwin, director of local government services with Legislative Auditor’s office, said today.

Bennetts scaring up votes online

Local couple’s photo selected in Top 10 in national competition

Local couple Greg and Debbie Bennett got a lot more than they bargained for when they put in an order for some new spooky figures to add to their Halloween decorations this year.
“The company, Grandin Road, is where all of the figures in the photograph came from,” Greg Bennett said. “When we ordered some new figures this year, they sent an email notifying us of the contest.”

Local campuses highlight domestic violence

A domestic violence student forum discusses with openness and animation relationships and abuse. Domestic violence awareness days on campus, where sorority members dress up and wear purple ribbon pins. A 5K Homecoming Run, dedicated to domestic violence prevention. “Kiss With A Fist” — a night of dramatic monologues and other performance art on the topic of dating violence. A campus candlelight vigil called “Light The Lady,” is to be attended by the entire Panhellenic Council.

Club News: Brazzel speaks at Cosmos Club

The October meeting of Cosmos Club was held at the First National Bank.
President Linda Newbold called the meeting to order and presented the afternoon’s speaker, Eric Brazzel, Ruston fireman. He illustrated his talk with slides which depicted house fires and car fires and discussed response time from the receipt of the alarm at the station to arrival at the fire site.
He strongly emphasized the importance of homes having working smoke detectors and checking batteries in them several times a year.

A look back at Tech’s Homecoming game

News and notes from Saturday’s Homecoming game for Lousiaana Tech:
• North Texas scored 28 unanswered points to defeat Tech, 28-13. The win by the Mean Green ties the all-time series 6-6.
• North Texas’ first road win of the season also snapped a drought of 26 straight games following a win to notch its first winning streak since 2004.
• The loss was the first time Tech has been defeated on Homecoming since a 24-14 loss to Idaho on Oct. 14, 2006.
• The contest was the first time this season Tech lost after holding a double-digit lead.

Tech soccer starts strong

Sloan scores 11 seconds into match to spark win

The earliest a goal had ever been scored by a Louisiana Tech soccer player was 41 seconds.
That record was broken on Sunday evening when freshman forward Kathryn Sloan netted a goal just 11 seconds into the match to propel the Lady Techsters to a 2-0 win over Southern Miss at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.

Techsters fall in straight sets

Louisiana Tech’s volleyball team fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-22) to Conference USA foe Southern Miss Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gym.
The loss dropped the Lady Techsters to 7-15 on the season and moved Tech to a 1-6 mark in conference action. Southern Miss moves to a 12-10 overall record with a 3-4 record in league play.
Despite outperforming the Golden Eagles statistically in the first set, Louisiana Tech failed to finish strong and dropped the opening game 25-20 to the visitors from Southern Miss.

Tech bowlers finish 8th at Tulane Invitational

NEW ORLEANS — In its first tournament of the season, the Louisiana Tech women’s bowling team placed eighth at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational and recorded four individual top 50 finishes this past weekend at the AMF All Star Lanes in New Orleans.
The three-day invitational, which was hosted by the Tulane Green Wave, featured four nationally ranked teams and a total of 11 participants.

Thank a police officer today

Ruston is a growing city. With the downtown construction to enhance our streetscape, added businesses and influx of people, Ruston needs the protection and security of a great police force. Luckily, we have such a great group of people who are dedicated to law enforcement and the safety of us as citizens.
In the last month, Ruston Police Department and the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office have made mention of new officers who graduated from police academy.

GSU needs positive attention

Being part of the national spotlight is nothing new for the Grambling State University athletics department and especially the university’s football team.
It was that football team along with the school’s world-renowned Marching Tiger Band that made Grambling a household word in the 1960s and 70s.
Everybody knew about and talked about Grambling.
Now, once again, everyone knows about and is talking about Grambling State University — for all the wrong reasons.
