Airman seeks old friends

in

Arkansas resident Verle Shelby is hoping to connect with some old Ruston acquaintances this Christmas.
“In 1955, I was in the Air Force and was driving home to Arkansas from San Francisco where I had recently purchased a new red 1956 Plymouth car,” Shelby wrote in a statement.
Along the way, Shelby found company for his long drive.
“I happened to notice two young sailors walking down the highway,” Shelby wrote. “I stopped and offered them a ride. Not only did they accept the ride, but they also shared the driving until I dropped them off at their destination in the Ruston area.”

Lincoln Parish is home to quite a few hidden treasures, and the Outdoor Wilderness Learning Center can be added to that list.
Samantha Luttrell, farm and equine supervisor for the OWL Center, said the 800-plus acres that are the OWL Center were partially donated in the 1970s, by Loraine Howard — a local businesswoman, and the remaining land was purchased in the 1990s.
“The OWL Center is more than 800 acres of rolling hills, beautiful facilities and programs designed to encourage teamwork, family bonds, character development, education and fun,” she said.

Selecting the right fruit variety for the home garden

in
Hotard, Steven.jpg

There is great interest by gardeners in incorporating edible fruit producing plants into the landscape or creating a small home orchard. Opportunities exist for the production of many favorite fruit for urban homeowners with limited space as well as rural residents.
Home-grown vine or tree-ripened fruit is higher in quality than those grown in far-away places and shipped to local grocery stores. Growing fruit can also be profitable and satisfying, and most fruit trees add many benefits to a landscape.

Remembering the reason for the season

Each year we set time aside to spend with loved ones during the holiday season.
With Christmas upon us, each resident should take this time to be thankful for what they have and to remember the reason for the season.
Most families will be opening Christmas presents either tonight or in the morning, or just enjoying quality time with family.
However, there are some who go above and beyond to help those less fortunate and visit nursing homes, such as the Louisiana Tech University women’s soccer team, or go caroling throughout the city.
