Showdown with Seminoles

Bulldogs to battle Florida State in NIT for second straight year

RUSTON — For the second straight season, Louisiana Tech will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on Florida State in the National Invitation Tournament at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
The contest will be televised on ESPN2 with tipoff set for 6 p.m. today and this time the winner advances to Madison Square Garden in New York City for the NIT Final Four.

Bulldogs take 4-3 victory at Grambling

Senior Taylor Burch was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run to help lead Louisiana Tech (9-14) to 4-3 win over Grambling State (6-18) two sweep the season series, 2-0, Tuesday night at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
With the game knotted at 3-3 after seven innings, Louisiana Tech loaded the bases to bring up Taylor Love, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Ervine from third and give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead heading to the ninth.

RJHS wins home meet

The Ruston Junior High girls track team got off to a strong start for the 2014 season on March 11 as the Lady Bearkits won their home meet, taking first place in 14 of 15 events at the Ruston High School track.
“It was a great meet and good start for this team,” head coach Kathy Steed said. “We would like to thank our sponsors – Princeton Place, Zaxby’s, Ryan’s Steakhouse, Sonic, Pizza Inn, Johnny’s Pizza and Dominos. I’d also like the RJHS staff and coaches as well as Louisiana Tech athletes and our wonderful parents that helped make it a successful meet.

Diamond ’Cats playing strong

The Ruston Bearcats have gone 3-2 in five games played over the past week with the most recent game being a 7-3 home win over Haughton on Tuesday night.
On March 20, the Bearcats defeated Captain Shreve 4-1 with Garret Soileau going the distance to pick up the win while striking out six Gators.
Gunner Durrett led the offensive attack with three hits and an RBI while Cannon Brasuell added two hits (one double) and an RBI.
Kramer Newsome also had two hits for the Bearcats while Seth White (double) and Graham White each added one RBI.

Sports Briefs: Tech softball to host NSU

Louisiana Tech (11-20) will step out of Conference USA action when the Lady Techsters host Northwestern State (13-14) at 6 p.m. today at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
Tech travels to Natchitoches to face NSU on April 23.

Tech Debate team the champ

The Louisiana Tech University Debate Team kicked off the spring quarter by bringing a championship back to Ruston.
Demonstrating their mastery of logic and their rhetorical strengths throughout the tournament, Tech bested such schools such as University of Michigan, Marquette University and Purdue University to win the Crossroads of the World Debate Tournament held March 15-17 on the campus of Purdue University.

Celebrating St. Paddy’s Day

The Louisiana Laureate chapter of Beta Sigma Phi enjoyed an early St. Patrick’s Day party on March 8 at the home of Don and Pat Edington. Members dined on a buffet of loaded baked potatoes, salad, assorted appetizers and desserts at tables decorated in green garlands, shamrocks, gold coins and beads. Help our future leaders help CCA

Throughout the school year, many children in our community rely on the school lunch program to ensure they have enough food to eat. Families struggle to put just one meal on the table during that time, so when summer hits they face an even greater burden.
Stephanie Mitchell, director of Christian Community Action, recently told the members of Leadership Lincoln that summertime presents one of the greatest needs for her organization. She said during the holidays, CCA receives a plethora of donations, but that stock is often depleted by the summertime.

Senate considers pipeline spot

Today could be the day the Louisiana Senate decides whether to endorse a proposal that would allow the next step toward a long-talked-about pipeline from Lake D’Arbonne to Farmerville and Ruston to be taken.
A bill by Sen. Mike Walsworth, R-West Monroe, allowing the Union-Lincoln Regional Water Supply Initiative to buy 21.5 acres in the Old Lake D’Arbonne State Park as a site for water treatment plant, won approval last week from the Senate Natural Resources Committee.
