Moving past Winter Storm Pax

Ruston and Lincoln Parish are getting back to normal today as the ice coat from Winter Storm Pax continues to melt. All public and private schools were back in session; government offices, operational and roadways reopened.
Public safety officials said despite the inconvenience, the storm caused no major incidents or damage.
“I think we did really well,” said Kip Franklin, Lincoln Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness director.
“The only major issues we had were traffic snarls.”

Tech debate team earns among ‘16 best’ in Americas

The Louisiana Tech University Debate Team flexed its muscle as a debate powerhouse, earning a spot among the top 16 programs in North and South America, during the 2014 Pan American Debate Championship held Jan. 24-26 at the University of Miami.
The Pan American Championship is a tournament held to honor debate in the Americas, bringing together the best debaters from North and South America to compete. This year’s tournament was held on the campus of the University of Miami.

Bearcats grab win over Ouachita

MONROE — The Bearcats stayed alive down the stretch in the race for the District 2-5A championship Thursday as Ruston High School outlasted Ouachita Parish High School 66-59 at OPHS.
Ruston took a season sweep over the Lions and now stands at 19-8 overall and 7-1 in district play, staying within striking distance of leader Natchitoches Central (23-3, 7-0).
Ruston jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, the Lions roared back to tie things up at 12-12 at the 2:18 mark of the opening stanza.
But the Bearcats battled back with a six-point run and 18-12 lead to close out the quarter.

Charlotte tops Lady Techsters, 85-61

Second-half surge propels 49ers to victory

Lulu Perry scored a game-high 19 points and Whitney Frazier added 15 points but Charlotte took advantage of Louisiana Tech’s lack of transition defense in the second half to pull away from the Lady Techsters 85-61 Thursday night at the Thomas Assembly Center.

Tech baseball opens 2014 season today

For the 10th time since head coach Wade Simoneaux has been at Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs will open the 2014 baseball season at home to play hosts to in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. today at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
The 2014 season gets underway tomorrow night with play continuing throughout the weekend with the second game of the series scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday. A 1 p.m. contest between the Bulldogs and Lions will wrap up the three-game set for both teams on Sunday.

Dykes dealing with another tragedy

Sonny Dykes is dealing with another heartbreaking moment in his head football coaching career.
In his next to last season as the top coach at Louisiana Tech University, he and the Bulldogs’ family mourned the loss of running back Tyrone Duplessis.
Now, after one season as head coach at the University of California, he is dealing with the sudden absence of one of his players.
Ted Agu, a junior defensive lineman for the Bears, recently passed away following a training run on campus. He collapsed near the completion of a distance run with several of his teammates.

Tech Bowling set for Track Kat Klash

Louisiana Tech’s women’s bowling team returns to action for the first time in 2014 as the team travels to compete in the third annual Track Kat Klash hosted by Sam Houston beginning today in Houston.
Louisiana Tech, along with 20 other teams, is scheduled to compete in the annual event, which will take place at Palace Lanes. Sam Houston State, a team that is currently ranked seventh in the National Ten Pins Coaches Association poll, will play hosts to the opposing teams.

Tech track heads to Tyson Invitational

Louisiana Tech will face some of the nation’s best track programs in the country — including the top-ranked teams on both the men’s and women’s side — as Tech competes at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., in a two-day meet beginning today.
The men’s team will be facing nine teams ranked in the top 25 including host No. 1 Arkansas, No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 6 Florida State. Other ranked teams competing include No. 9 Nebraska, No. 13 Texas, No. 17 Mississippi State, No. 18 LSU, No. 23 Illinois and No. 24 Southern California.

Putting variety into V-Day

Each year residents flood stores with the hopes of choosing the best gift for their loved ones on Valentine’s Day.
But what many may not realize is there is a variety of ways to show love and appreciation.
According to National Public Radio, the origins of Valentine’s Day are not known specifically. However, they do give a brief overview of how the holiday has evolved to what we know it today.

Winter woes won't stop her

The past week has seemingly been one for the record books for North Louisiana with it’s below freezing temperatures and large amounts of ice.
Sitting at work Tuesday afternoon, the uproar of shock and awe began on the winter weather front since the ice and sleet were coming down quite heavily in downtown Ruston.
I hadn’t so much as gotten situated in my vehicle to head home when my husband called to let me know just how bad the roads were getting and that I probably needed to head on home.
