Several roads closed due to water

Only one Lincoln Parish road was still under water this morning as a result of Sunday’s heavy rains.
Parish Administrator Courtney Hall said Flowers Road, near Dubach, remained closed. At the peak of the rains Sunday evening, parts of 20 parish roads were submerged, Hall said.
“Other than just a major deluge of water, we came out OK,” Kip Franklin, director of the Lincoln Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said.

University Hills residents work to improve their neighborhood

Residents in Ruston’s University Hills area want to be the first in the city to implement new self-enforced property standards through a provision in Ruston’s master plan that allows neighborhoods to have more control over their future.
The University Hills Neighborhood Conservation Overlay District Committee has filed an application with the city’s planning and zoning commission for creation of a neighborhood conservation overlay district.

LPPJ to meet on Tuesday

The Lincoln Parish Police Jury will have two committee meetings Tuesday night beginning at 6 p.m. before entering into regular session at 7 p.m.
The first will be conducted by the Public Property and Buildings Committee where a capitol outlay request will be discussed, as well as a request on a lease renewal from Aaron Rents, Inc.
Aaron’s is proposing a five-year renewal of its lease at the current terms, which were originally created in September of 2009 at $3,334 per month. The committee will take action on whether or not to approve the request.

Creek teams win home track meet

Cedar Creek won both divisions of the recent Cedar Creek Invitational Track Meet, with the girls teams easily outpacing second-place Rayville while the Cougars boys team held on two edge past Delhi by six points.
The Lady Cougars won 10 of 18 events with Ann-Marie Kimble (22.5 points) being named MVP and Karlee Malone (29.95) being the high point athlete.
Cedar Creek’s Donald Jenkins was named boys MVP of the meet with 18.5 points.

2. Rayville — 99 points

’Cats sweep Rebels

Ruston High School made it a clean sweep of West Monroe and remained undefeated in District 2-5A as the Bearcats topped the Rebels 14-6 on Friday and held on for a 3-2 win on Saturday.
RHS now stands at 14-9 overall and 6-0 in District 2-5A on the season while West Monroe fell to 10-12 and 0-6.
Ben LeBlanc powered Ruston’s road win on Friday with a five-for-five performance at the plate with two doubles and a RBI.

Tech track places 7 in top 10 of SFA meet

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Louisiana Tech had seven marks finish in the top 10 as action concluded late at the Skechers Carl Kight Invitational hosted by Stephen F. Austin.
Aaron Orduno was responsible for a pair of top-10 finishes on his own at SFA, finishing third in the shot put with a throw of 51-8.25 (15.75m) and seventh in the discus, throwing 146-2 (44.55m). William Washington followed Orduno in both events, finishing eighth in the shot put (47-2.5/14.39m) and 18th in the discus (117-8/35.86m).

Tech golf set to close out regular season

Louisiana Tech’s men’s golf team will close the 2013-14 regular season this week as the Bulldogs travel to West Point, Miss. to compete in the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship hosted by Mississippi State.
Action began at 8:30 a.m. today with a shotgun start. 36-holes will be played today and Tuesday will begin with a 9 a.m. start at holes one and 10.

Inside Bulldog Baseball to air tonight on KNBB

Louisiana Tech head coach Wade Simoneaux will join Bulldog broadcaster Dave Nitz in the studio for a one-hour edition of Inside Bulldog Baseball, the weekly radio show that airs at 6 p.m. tonight on KNBB 97.7 FM.
Nitz and Simoneaux will sit down at the local ESPN studios to recap Louisiana Tech’s three-game conference series against UAB last weekend, while also taking a look at the upcoming three games against FIU beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, in Ruston.

Pro Day gives hope, faith

The Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Louisiana are continuing to do all they can to support the growth of area youth and we as a community should in turn suppport the club.
A prime example was the annual Fred Dean’s Hall of Fame Pro Day football camp and luncheon held Saturday.
Former and current professional football players took time out of their busy schedules to teach young men the importance of pursuing their dreams while making it fun through sports-related activities.

Wishing rainy days away

Careful what you wish for.
I heard more than a few people last week wish for rain as a deluge of yellow pine pollen descended from trees, covering cars, trucks, sidewalks and anything else in its path.
It’ll take a couple of days to know for sure, but hopefully that pollen has been washed away by the constant downpour we received from late Saturday to late Sunday night, with plenty of thunder to go around, too.
