Excitement builds for historic event

In fact, Higgins felt so good about the city council passing the motion that she already had a draft version of the proclamation she read aloud during the Jan. 8 meeting.
“We knew we didn’t have a lot of time, so I got together with some others and we came up with the letter,” Higgins said.
“I had talked to a couple of the councilmen about how we needed to present a statement from the city for the president-elect, and they were positive about it so we went ahead and prepared a draft.”

Rookie QB leads Ravens vs. Steelers

Only last week, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger quick kicked, of all things. If that’s not something out of a Sammy Baugh playbook, what is?
The Ravens and Steelers are so alike in style, attitude and makeup that it’s difficult to tell one from the other, so perhaps it’s fitting the two rivals will play for the AFC championship tonight. If this isn’t the NFL’s version of a backyard brawl, what is?
May the nastiest team win.
“When you get two bullies going up against each other, it’s about who is the strongest bully,” Steelers linebacker James Farrior said.

Missile Defense tabs Tech firm

“Our proprietary technology is really an anti-tamper method,” he said. “What we are seeking to do on our programs is to prevent people from being able to disassemble components of critical technology.”
Reverse-engineering, he said, can be thought of as taking something apart to determine how it works.
“It’s akin to breaking the encryption on a piece of software, which lets you read what’s going on,” he said.
The proposal submitted to the MDA is for a “capacitive fabric” that would theoretically protect sensitive intellectual property and technology.

Become a part of the green

Becoming more environmentally sensitive is not just a trendy concept to me; it’s something I’m consciously trying to do in my own life. I’m not alone in this, although sometimes it feels that way, especially in this area.
Point in case: In the week or so after my column ran in the paper, I received some negative feedback about it. This was incredibly disappointing to me and also helps explain why Lincoln Parish has made such little progress in its attempt to clean up, resolve the trash situation and generally be more aware of waste and what happens to it once it leaves a home or business.

Lady Techsters topple SJSU

It was an important victory for Tech, which had lost four of its previous five games.
“It was a good win for us, but give credit to San Jose State for the effort they gave,” said Techsters’ coach Chris Long. “They played hard and they played loose. They zoned us the entire game, which surprised us because they had been using a man-to-man defense a lot. But they packed the paint against us and kept attacking us as the game went on.”

People are what they drink

Wake up, people. Think again, pick up a book, and get informed. This is your health and your life that you are leaving in the hands of corporations who want only to sell their products for profit — lots of it. Believe it or not, they don’t care about your health. Apply this logic to all facets of the food industry, and you’ll be better off.

Spend day off in community outreach

It’s a lot for one man to shoulder, but Obama has many fine examples of leadership he can look to as he takes the highest office in the world.
King, Obama’s predecessor, also sought to forge a common ground. He wanted people from all walks of life to disregard color and address issues that spanned across those racial lines.
In the 40 years since the vicious act of murder that claimed the leader so many leaned on as a symbol of inner strength, the nation has done a lot of healing. Obama’s election is one step on that long road of progress.

Tech has hoops’ fest at home

It’s the busiest three-day stretch of the home season for the Tech squads, both of whom will be trying to move past the .500 winning percentage plateau either in overall or Western Athletic Conference play.
A look at the ’Dogs and Techsters as they head into the weekend:
