Gibson: ‘Bittersweet’ season

Prevent colon cancer with regular tests

The American Cancer Society recommends regular screenings for colon cancer for all adults age 50 and older.
While the thought of undergoing the screening may be a little unsavory, it can be a life-saving test that proves well worth it in the end.
If it’s been a while since you were screened, or if you’ve never had it done, please take the time to make an appointment.

“It’s a Mobile Command Post that we can take to the scene for that particular type of incident,” Davis said. “We designed it and had it built.”
The unit, primarily for law enforcement, he said, is also for the use of fire stations and any other public service agencies.
It’s equipped with a restroom, refrigerator and fresh water storage. It has central air and heating, with its own generator. However, Davis said you could also run it to shore line to connect to an alternate energy source. The unit also has its own telephone system inside and externally.

Schools’ ACT improvements garner statewide honor

With approximately 370 schools eligible to be considered for the award, Gullikson said it was impressive that two of the eight schools garnering the achievement were in the same parish.
Simsboro High School had a composite score of 19.5 in 2007 with 31 students tackling the exam. The average ACT composite score at Choudrant High was 19.7 in 2007, with 47 students taking the exam, compared with only 30 in 2006.
