CABL works to inform

But with term limits taking effect for the first time, a large portion of the House will be turned out, opening the door for a whole new group of legislators.
Granted, many of those leaving the House have already thrown their hats into the ring for the Senate or some other elected position, but there will still be a significant number of first-timers when the next legislative session opens.
In an effort to help voters make wise choices, CABL will send questionnaires to each candidate asking for their stance on specific issues.

Vitter, like others, failed us

Granted, none of us are perfect.
But Vitter led us to believe that if he was not perfect, he at least practiced what he preached.
While his first action was at least honorable — he admitted his mistake and said he had asked both his God and his wife for forgiveness — what followed was anything but honorable: he’s basically hid.
Sadly, Vitter’s actions are just another in a long line of failures by those in whom we’ve placed our trust.

CABL head hits ethics, finance

Erwin said CABL is more of an advocacy group.
“We have an affinity about what we think will work,” Erwin. “We are an action arm; we’re similar, yet separate in our mission.”
In speaking of the financial steps taken during the 2007 Legislative Session, Erwin said legislators had more money to spend than ever before.
“We might never have this much again, or at least for a long time,” Erwin said. “There was a lot of new money from recovery funds in New Orleans and higher oil prices.”

Edwards could be in race

Maybe by Grambling State University’s season opening game, the senior wide receiver will have garnered some attention from the voters who cast ballots on such prestigious honors as that Biletnikoff trophy.
That’s the one given to the country’s top performer at the wideout position.
And ask anyone who plays against Edwards in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the Houston product should definitely considered for the award.

Agribusiness opportunities abound

“It was a very beneficial program, but we had very few attendees,” Lusby said. “The purpose of the program was to offer the information and make people aware of what is out there. We would be glad to provide the information we have available on an ongoing basis; however, these seminars are the best way to get the most information from the most sources at one time.”
Lusby said it is a shame to see these possibilities going to waste.
He noted all of the representatives talked both with faculty members and with local citizens, and many of these were not familiar with any of the programs.

Nothing like grandparents

One of the most enjoyable parts of childhood is learning to play games played by a child’s parents and grandparents. I remember so well playing the button game with my grandmother.

Vitter scandal opens can of worms

“I don’t want a man like that legislating for me, especially in the areas of morality,” he said.
Flynt has offered to pay $1 million to anyone who can show he or she had a sexual encounter with a member of Congress or a high-ranking government official. He said the offer has produced promising tips.
“We’ve got 20-something investigations that all look good,” Flynt said during a news conference at his Beverly Hills office.

DeMoss returns to coaching

Now, DeMoss is back at courtside.
She has been named as an assistant coach at the University of Texas by new head coach Gail Goestenkors, effective this weekend.
“Months ago, I left the coaching profession -- to retire, really -- and take my first break from the game of basketball,” DeMoss said. “It was not an easy decision, but one I truly needed to make.
“My time off was substantial. It was unprecedented in my past personal history. These months allowed me to reassess what I wanted to do. I learned what my personal comfort zone and preferences would be in any work environment.”

Triad helps beat the summer heat

This is where Lincoln Parish Triad Association steps in.
Each summer, the organization holds a fan drive so that those who are battling the summer heat will have some means to keep cool.
Community members are encouraged to donate fans or money to purchase fans, and Triad members distribute them to the homes of those in need.
In addition to obtaining a fan, those who believe they may be at risk for heat-related illness should also:
• Drink plenty of water;
• Restrict outside activities or shopping to the early morning when it‘s cool;

Fireworks inspire more than awe

As they absorbed feelings of sadness, pride and awe inside the church and took in the amazing sights outside, many undoubtedly dreamed bigger than themselves. They might have imagined how more than 200 years ago, people struggled through resistance in the hopes of creating a better world for humanity. Something that existed only in the minds of a few colonists gradually became a reality. They did not have to stay in a situation where they were unhappy; their limitations were dissolved by their courage to pursue their dreams.
