Head Start serves community

Out of the Head Start student population in the 2006-07 school year, 100 percent were considered low income and more than 10 percent had some type of disability.
“We currently serve 340 children in Lincoln and Union parishes with two centers in Ruston, one center in Bernice and one center in Farmerville,” Head Start Program director M.K. Hill said. “These children are provided educational activities using an approved curriculum with degreed teachers.”

He’s joined on that squad by teammates Tyler Miller at offensive tackle, D’Anthony Smith at defensive lineman, Brannon Jackson at linebacker and Mark Dillard in the secondary.
Tech players included on the third team were defensive lineman Joshua Muse and Marquis McBeath and Quin Harris at linebacker.
The Bulldogs’ representatives on the fourth team were wide receiver Josh Wheeler and offensive lineman Ryan Considine.

Club, camp positive step for kids

Sixty area children have found their way to the camp to participate in its life-enhancing activities. Because of lack of space and funds, this opportunity could not be possible for other children whose names have been placed on a waiting list.
“In years past, we’ve had more than 100,” Williams said. “I think last year we’ve had 75 or 80. We could have had more, but we don’t have room. We’ve got a waiting list of about 10 or 15 names that we just could not accommodate at the time.”
But the club has help.

To Dad — My best friend

Since then, I like to think that the necessary qualities to become a member of that inner ring of friends have become more refined. Now, a best friend should share my interests, have a good memory and “be there” for me, among other things.
I’m glad to say that Dad still measures up.

Suspect arrested for murders

“The shots weren’t reported at the time, but that’s what (witnesses) told us later,” he said. “We were receiving a lot of information but we developed persons of interest pretty early.”
One of those people of interest was Decameo M. Reynolds, 22. He was picked up Friday afternoon on a probation warrant and taken to the LPSO for questioning. Stone said based on information gathered from Reynolds and throughout the investigation, Reynolds was arrested for the two murders.

Millsap: Star on the rise

“You do that and they’ll take it to you.”
In his first test as a professional player, the former Louisiana Tech University star took that attitude to heart and added it on to his trademark hard work ethics and total focus to enjoy an outstanding rookie season.
Millsap averaged 6.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest, proved to be one of the league’s top reserve contributors and was named to the second unit of the All-Rookie team in 2006-2007.

Medians for emergency vehicles only

These crossovers are usually marked with signs that read “Official Use Only,” “Emergency Vehicles Only” or “Keep Off Median.”
However, due to recent road work on Interstate 20 in Lincoln Parish, many motorists are using these crossovers to get to exits that are otherwise closed.

New Orleans still struggles to recover

The temptation to start over was very real — for years experts had predicted a tragedy the magnitude of Katrina or even worse. But to tear everything down would have meant losing a part of Louisiana’s history, forever. The right decision was made — try to save what was salvageable and rebuild what was not.

Police investigate double murder

Stone said the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 2:27 p.m. Thursday and responded to the trailer located just south of the Ruston city limits.
Witnesses in the trailer park said they heard gunshots at about 4 a.m. Thursday, but that gunshots were a regular occurrence in the neighborhood.
“We’ve got that same information and other leads that we’re following,” Stone said. “We’ve got three investigators working on this full time and they’ll stay on it until it is resolved.”
