Parish teams seek playoff wins

Ruston High will have its Round No. 2 test set for Wednesday night rather than tonight, what with Ellender’s girls among the entries in the annual “Sweet 16” state tournament in Hammond.
The Bearcats will host the Patriots starting at 6:30 p.m.
Here’s a sizeup of each of the second round appointments for parish teams:

RPAR seeks local shoe donations

Soles4Souls, founded by Wayne Elsey as a response to the tsunami which hit Indonesia in 2004, is a little more than a year old and was able to provide a quarter of a million pair of shoes for tsunami victims and triple that amount for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The organization provides shoes for not just disaster relief efforts but for everyday needs of people all over the world.
“The simplicity of what we do is the reason we’re successful,” Elsey said. “We get shoes; we give shoes … We call it changing the world one pair at a time.”

Signs of a postmodern society

• A breakdown in the traditional social institutions of marriage, family, church and school;
• A lack of common sense;
• A general confusion about what is right and what is wrong;
• A decline in personal responsibility and a tendency to blame others for our actions;
• An information glut and inability to separate the truth from lies;
• Apathy or indifference to issues outside of ourselves;

Fire deaths prompt concern

“Basically what we will do is send a fire engine out with a company, and they will go around the outside and the inside of the home and point out anything that could be dangerous,” he said. “It usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes.”
Tornabene said some of the hazards firefighters will be looking for include space heaters located too close to combustible materials, gas cans anywhere near water heaters and candles that are not in any kind of glass jars.
